RHONDOR DOWLAT-ROSTANT

Police officers are investigating two more murders that took place in North Trinidad on Thursday along with three separate shooting incidents.

The victims have been identified as 31-year-old businessman Nicholas Mohit, of Eastern Main Road Arouca and 19-year-old Javon Jabari Clement ‘aka’ Shorto, of John Trace, Benny Street Valencia and Laventille Road, Laventille.

In the first incident, at about 4 pm on Thursday 11 March 2021, Mohith was seated in the garage of his home when a gunman reportedly entered the yard, pointed a gun in his direction and opened fire. The suspect then ran off.

Mohith’s father discovered his son to be suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach and took him to the Arima Health Facility where he was medically examined and transferred to the Mt Hope Hospital.  At about 10 pm that same day, Mohith succumbed to his injuries while undergoing surgery at the Mt Hope Hospital.

Mohith operated an Auto air conditioning business. A motive is yet to be established for his killing.

In the second incident, at about 1:15 am on Friday, Clement was lying in his bed with his girlfriend at his home at John Trace, Benny Street, Valencia, when an unknown gunman entered the premises and opened fire on him.  The assailant also threw gasoline on Clement’s girlfriend, who managed to escape.

Clement subsequently died. A motive is also yet to be established.

Meanwhile…  Three separate shooting incidents are also engaging the police’s attention.

In Diego Martin, a 37-year-old machine operator was at his home at Quarry Road at about 7.30 am when he got into an altercation with a man known to him. During the fight, the victim was stabbed multiple times to both hands, right knee and head. He was taken to St James hospital by relatives where he was treated and listed in a stable condition. He was then transferred to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital.

In Chaguanas, a 31-year-old man of Enterprise Street, Enterprise, Chaguanas, was in company with other people standing in front of a shop along Enterprise Street at about 9:15pm, when two men unknown to them — dressed in dark coloured clothing armed with firearms — came out of Richard Lane, which is nearby, and started shooting in their direction.

The victim, together with the other people, ran for safety in different directions. The victim hid under an abandoned house.  Shortly after, he realized that he was shot in the left side of the hip area.

The victim was taken by a neighbour to the Chaguanas Health Facility and was later transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.

In Sangre Grande, at about 8.30 pm on Thursday, a 27-year-old man of North Eastern Settlement, Sangre Grande, was at the corner of l.A. Drive and Pine Avenue talking with his friend when a green Almera pulled up on the roadway next to them. Two men wearing dark clothing and ski masks exited the front passenger and back right passenger seats, and started shooting in their direction.

Both men ran in an easterly direction along l.A. Drive but were pursued and shot at in the process. However, no one was injured. The gunmen then returned to the vehicle and sped off.

The scene was visited and processed by Crime Scene Investigators who recovered 13 spent shells and one live round of 9mm ammunition.
