A member of the United States (US) Navy and a female friend from east Port-of-Spain have been granted a total of $850,000 in bail for firearm possession.

Emmanuel Dennis, 28, of Brooklyn, New York, and his 21-year-old friend, from Mosley Place, East Dry River, were granted $600,000 and $250,000 in bail when they appeared before Magistrate Aden Stroude in the Port-of-Spain Magistrate’s Court, yesterday afternoon.

According to reports, the duo was arrested near O2 Park in Chaguaramas on Sunday after police allegedly searched the vehicle and found a loaded Taurus pistol on the floor.

Presenting submissions on Dennis’ behalf, his lawyer Criston J Williams noted that his client had a clean criminal record and was entitled to bail.

Police prosecutor Sgt Azard Ali objected as he questioned whether he (Dennis) would return for hearings of his case if he was granted bail and allowed to return to the United States.

Williams responded by pointing out that T&T has an extradition treaty with the US which could be utilised in the unlikely event that his client absconds.

Stroude initially considered using Dennis’ mother as surety for his bail but changed his mind after she admitted that she is a US resident.

Before granting the bail, Stroude warned Dennis on the consequences of failing to abide by his bail conditions.

In the application for Dennis’ friend, her lawyer Richard Clarke-Wills noted that in the summary of evidence in the case, police admitted that there were in fact four occupants in the car and two of them ran away to avoid arrest.

“Their case is not as strong as they may like,” Clarke-Wills said.

During the hearing, Stroude gave instructions to the police on submitting the firearm for ballistic testing. He then adjourned the case to May 13.

Meanwhile, an amputee and his caregiver were yesterday denied bail after appearing before Stroude for firearm possession.

Daniel Blandin and Ayana Lemaitre were denied bail as their criminal record tracing was not available.

Blandin and Lemaitre were arrested at a house in Sea Trace, Diego Martin, late last week, after police allegedly found a Baretta pistol inside.

Stroude is expected to reconsider bail for the duo when they reappear before him, this morning.
