Minister of Foreign and Caricom Affairs Dr Amery Browne has confirmed that they are aware of only one T&T national trapped in Ukraine thus far as Russia’s invasion of the country entered its third day on Saturday.
Russian attacks on Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, where the T&T national and his wife live and work, have been met with fierce resistance by the Ukrainian military.
Browne said yesterday, “He is the only T&T national that has been identified thus far, but I have instructed that our team continues to verify and use all channels including our diaspora contacts to ascertain if there are any others who have not been registered, nor reached out, nor asked for support.” He said the identified T&T national was married to a Ukrainian and has been resident there for the past 11 years.
“I have remained in constant communication with him via cell phone since we were first able to establish contact yesterday (Friday). We have been exploring all available options at this stage for him to get out of that country.”
He said he had just been informed that a new Ukrainian government curfew had made one of the existing options impractical, for which the T&T national had confirmed tickets in hand for ground transport out of the country.
Browne revealed that the couple had approached and was working with several other governments and agencies in the region to assist in getting to a neighbouring country.
The minister said updates and further details will be provided, with due consideration of concerns around the safety and security of his location and movements.
