Cell Phones found during a search inside the Remand Yard Section of the Golden Grove prison.

Hours after a fiery riot and attempted jailbreak at the Golden Grove Remand Yard Prison in Arouca, a search of the prison resulted in the discovery and seizure of several cellphones, improvised weapons and cigarettes.

In a release issued by the T&T Prison Service, it stated that a search was conducted at the facility on Wednesday.

The exercise came following the riotous situation which developed and was later quelled, at the prison.

The inmates were subsequently taken out and relocated from their housing area after wreaking severe havoc on the structural fixtures, roof, walls, locks and lighting several fires inside the Southern Division.

To effectively assess the structural damage sustained, the clean-up/search exercise was authorised by Commissioner of Prisons (Ag.), Dennis Pulchan. A contingent of officers, inclusive of recruits, discovered the items hidden in various areas of the prison.

Pulchan expressed his satisfaction and gratitude at the proficiency of the officers as “all hands were on board”.

He has advised that an investigation is ongoing into the matter and charges are expected to be laid.
