A Santa Cruz man was shot and killed by police on Thursday after he reportedly opened fire on them as they searched for arms and ammunition at his home.

The incident was said to have occurred around 11.48 pm at Percy Street, La Canoa.

The man, whose identity has not been released by officials, was said to be 31 years of age.

Reports said officers of the North-Eastern Division Task Force had gone to execute a search warrant at the home of man who was known to them.

It is claimed that upon arrival at the three-storey complex, officers surrounded and secured the premises before entering the building to execute the warrant.

As officers entered the residence of the suspect, he allegedly pointed a gun in the direction of the officers, who became fearful for their lives.

The officers, in keeping with the TTPS’ Use of Force Policy, opened fire on the suspect, hitting him several times about the body.

He was immediately rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Science Complex, Mt. Hope, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing emergency treatment.

Officers said they recovered one Tangfoglio 9mm pistol together with a magazine and ammunition near the victim.
