The Police Service is investigating several separate attacks that that were committed just before curfew hours kicked in on Tuesday 1 June 2021, and which left one man dead, and three others wounded.

Guyanaese national gunned down

In the first incident, a 45-year-old Guyanese national was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Piarco, while he was talking to a friend on Tuesday night, just a little over an hour before curfew hours went into effect.

The victim has been identified as Nigel Mootoo, of Carnbie Road, Piarco.

According to a police report, at about 7:45 pm, Mootoo was speaking to a friend at Carnbie Road in Piarco, when they saw a hatch back vehicle (believed to be a Nissan Tiida) drive into the roadway where they were and turn around.

Reports are that a man came out of the vehicle and began shooting. The gunman was described as wearing a mask, along with a white jersey and blue three-quarter pants.  He is said to be about five feet eight inches tall, with a slim build and dark complexion.

Mootoo was shot about his body and succumbed to his injuries on the scene while his 44-year-old friend, who was shot and wounded on the left side of his buttocks, was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex to seek medical attention.  The friend reportedly was medically examined and treated and is said to be in a stable condition.

At the scene, police recovered 21 spent 40 calibre casings, one projectile fragment, one apparent projectile and four deformed projectiles.

Mootoo’s body was removed and taken to the Forensic Science Centre for an autopsy.

Shooting in Greenvale

In a separate incident, a 29-year-old man of Greenvale, La Horquetta, Arima, escaped injuries during a shooting incident which occurred mere minutes before curfew time.

Police said at about 8:15 pm on Tuesday June 1st, the victim was in his vehicle (a black Mercedes Benz), heading to his home in Greenvale Avenue, La Horquetta. 

As he neared Castle Avenue, he observed that he was being followed by a black Ford Ranger, whose registration number unknown.  A short distance after, the same vehicle overtook him and stopped in front of his car.

The victim told police he then saw a man exit the black Ford Ranger and point a firearm in his direction. The gunman is said to be of African descent and short, with a medium build.

The victim reportedly reversed his vehicle and attempted to drive off, but the gunman opened fire on him.

The victim made his way to the La Horquetta Police Station to make a report.

Police officers visited the crime scene and processed it, however, nothing was recovered.

Stabbing in Arima

In another incident, a 21-year-old man of Pinto Road, Arima, was stabbed in the neck.

A police report stated that at about 9 pm on Tuesday, the victim, the 25-year-old suspect and the victim’s sister were liming and drinking alcohol in the Pinto Road area, when an argument reportedly broke out between the suspect and the victim.

During the argument, the victim drew a knife and attacked the suspect, dealing him injuries to the left index finger.  However, the suspect subsequently picked up a nearby Carib bottle, broke it and dealt the victim several stabs to the neck.

The victim’s sister alerted a nearby police patrol who responded.

The suspect was attended to and discharged.

The victim also was attended too by Dr. Chuniesingh and later transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex where he underwent emergency surgery.

Investigations are continuing.
