An 11-year-old boy was injured when gunmen broke into his Claxton Bay home early yesterday morning and killed his mother and her friend.
He is warded in a serious condition at the San Fernando General Hospital. His mother, Cindy Joseph, 33, and Elijah Hilaire, 18, were shot multiple times and died at the scene.
Police said at around 1.15 am, residents of Hill Top Road, Springvale, Claxton Bay, were awakened by loud explosions. Shortly after, three men were seen running from the area. Upon investigating, the residents found Joseph and Hilaire bleeding from gunshot wounds. Joseph’s son was bleeding from a wound to his left leg.
Residents and relatives at the scene declined to comment on the incident, but one relative complained about the crime situation in the country. He was also worried about Joseph’s son. Describing Joseph as a good and decent woman, he said she was not working anywhere.
Police said Hilaire had moved into her a house a few months ago.
Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the killings, but they said Hilaire had firearm-related charges before the court. Relatives said they were permitted by the police to secure Joseph’s house. They were blocking up the windows and door with pieces of wood to keep out thieves and vandals.
Police are trying to obtain CCTV footage to assist them in their inquiries. Autopsies were expected to performed on the bodies at the San Fernando General Hospital yesterday.
Detectives of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations are continuing investigations.
