The Secondary Entrance Assessment examination, the Concordat and curricula reform are among the areas on which the Education Ministry will embark on a national consultation between tomorrow and December 4.
Speaking at the launch yesterday, Education Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly admitted the sudden onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has brought new challenges, forcing the ministry to hasten its approach to ensure that no one is left behind. It is why she believes the consultation is needed now.
According to Minister Gadsby-Dolly, “Some of these issues are long-standing issues that we review from time to time as a country but sometimes it is not conclusive in respect of how we want to move forward and some of these issues are definitely based on COVID-19.”
She added, “For instance, the role of parents in education, these things have come out more strongly in this time.”
Other issues to be discussed will include, blended learning, the role of the Teaching Service Commission and Teacher Training and Development.
On March 28, 2019, Cabinet approved the Education Policy Paper 2017-2022 allowing the ministry to implement its policies, programmes and projects over this five-year period.
Gadsby-Dolly pointed out that this year marks the halfway point of the policy’s implementation, making it an “opportune time to take stock of what was accomplished thus far” and to make the necessary adjustments.
The discussion themed “Transforming Education” will be conducted virtually and will allow stakeholders, including students, to have their voices heard by calling during the meetings, sending an email via [email protected] or texting through WhatsApp to 1-868-776-0440. Written responses can also be dropped off at suggestion boxes which are now available at all Members of Parliament constituency offices.
Commenting on the ministry’s role in the transformation process, Gadsby-Dolly said she hopes to see it becoming more “agile” to ensure the country’s education system is not stunted like it was for a portion of this year because of the pandemic.
