One motorist is lucky to be alive after his vehicle went airborne and breached the perimeter fence of the Youth Training Centre in Arouca, on Monday morning.
According to a police report, the incident occurred at about 1 am.
Police said a white Nissan Wingroad vehicle was seen lying on its side, just off the roadway, on an open field attached to the centre.
Guardian Media understands the perimeter fence sustained minor damage, and the driver of the car was not seriously injured.
The driver reportedly told police and prison guards that he lost control of the car he was driving which veered off the road and went several feet in the air and over the fence.
The driver was taken to hospital for medical treatment; he was treated and discharged.
He subsequently lodged an incident report at the Arouca Police Station.
