RHONDOR DOWLAT-ROSTANT

Investigations are continuing into the death of a Guyanese national who was an inmate at the Maximum Security Prison (MSP), who was committed for murder.

The inmate has been identified as 49-year-old Basil Gobin, of Naparima Mayaro Road, Rio Claro.

According to a police report, at about 4:20 pm on Tuesday July 13th, Gobin, who was committed for murder on January 14th, 2010, and was to be sentenced today, July 14th, 2021, was found hanging in his cell by his cellmate.

The cellmate alerted a prison officer who, upon entering cell 290 located on Division A on the southern side of the MSP, reportedly saw Gobin in a kneeling position with what appeared to be a braided, cream-coloured piece of cloth wrapped around his eyes.  Gobin appeared to be motionless and unresponsive.

The officer then informed the Prisons Infirmary Officer and upon his arrival at the scene, the Infirmary officer checked the prisoner and noted barely perceptible pulse and breathing activity.

The prisoner was then taken to the Arima Health Facility, where he was pronounced dead at 5:20 pm.

Investigations are ongoing.
