Hours after Chief Secretary Ancil Dennis held a virtual meeting on Thursday evening with Glen Road residents about Tobago’s jail recently being relocated to their village, he sent a release saying the unoccupied facility has been closed.

In the statement, he said he had spoken to National Security Minister Stuart Young about the matter, and alternative accommodation will be sought for the prisoners.

On November 7, Prison Commissioner (Ag.) Dennis Pulchan commissioned the Glen Road facility and moved in prisoners the same day.

According to Tobago Regional Health Authority officials, the building at Montessori Drive was earmarked as a COVID-19 facility for prisoners, as 13 prisoners and five prison officers were infected with the virus.

However, Pulchan announced that it was the island’s new jail.
