Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has called on the nation to say a prayer for the family of Andrea Bharatt, following the discovery of her body in the Heights of Aripo yesterday.
Persad-Bissessar also called for the 23-year-old’s killers to be brought to swift justice.
The following is the statement issued by Persad-Bissessar yesterday.
“Like the entire nation this afternoon, I am heartbroken by the news of Andrea Bharatt’s death. I have been following the developments closely, hoping and praying that the outcome would have been different.
To Andrea’s family, friends and loved ones, I offer my deepest heartfelt condolences to you. I know that no amount of words can even begin to console you during this time, but know that you are not alone.
I cannot begin to imagine the pain, anger and sorrow you are feeling. I pray you have the strength to get through this harrowing ordeal.
As a mother and a grandmother, I know how precious our children are, and we always hope that they are safe, but sadly, there are cruel and wicked ones among us.
While now is not the time for recriminations and division, I hope those responsible for this heinous act, and so many others like it, are brought to swift justice.
If ever there was a time for us to unite as a nation to ensure that this level of turmoil and heartbreak on other families within our country would be limited in the future, it is now.
If ever there was a time for us to put aside our differences so we could protect our children and each other, it is now.
Tonight as we all say a prayer for Andrea’s family, let us all continue to pray for our brothers and sisters who remain missing.
May Andrea’s soul rest in peace.”
