A 55-year-old labourer was denied bail yesterday when he appeared before a Mayaro magistrate charged with one count of sexual penetration of a five-year-old boy.

The accused, who resides in Mayaro, will reappear before the court on Friday.

A police release said the suspect was arrested and charged by PC Mahabir of the Eastern Division Child Protection Unit (CPU) on Monday following an investigation into a report made to the police by a woman that her son was sexually assaulted by a man known to them.

According to the woman, sometime during the day on April 3, her son went to a neighbour’s house for ice where the man is said to have sexually penetrated the child.

A report was subsequently made to the Mayaro Police Station and detectives attached to the CPU began an investigation which resulted in the arrest of the suspect.

He was later charged with one count of sexual penetration of a child.

The investigation was headed by Insp Bain-Keller of the Eastern Division CPU.
