A major magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck north of Jamaica, triggering tsunami waves in the Western Caribbean.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has sent an alert stating that hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts of Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Honduras, Belize and Mexico.

The first waves were forecast to affect Jamaica at 3:20 PM Jamaica time, 4:20 PM T&T local time, with heights between 0.3 and 1.0 metre.

Damage has been reported across the Cayman Islands and western Jamaica, with no reports of fatalities at this time.

This earthquake was widely felt across the Western Caribbean, Central America and even in Miami, Florida in the United States.

No tsunami alerts, watches or warnings are in effect for Trinidad and Tobago as there is no threat to our country.
