The Ruthven Smith owned Making Headlines repeated the feat of his sire Headlines News seven years ago, when he won the feature Grade One – NLCB Gold Cup over 2,000metres on the main track and Santa Rosa Park, impressivey by 1 1/4 lengths from last year’s winner Master of War on Saturday.

In the process Making Headlines did the prestigious double of winning both the Stewards Cup and Gold Cup and joined the elite bands of a thoroughbred to achieve that feat.

Punters made the John O’Brien trained Making Headlines the 4-5 favourite to land the first prize cheque with Master of War and General JN well supported at odds of 4-1. The other O’Brien horse which was highly considered in the betting was the Independence Cup winner Apocalypse who was heavily supported at 7-2 in the National Lotteries Control Board (NLCB) sponsored event.

When the starter sent the field on their way the Shivam Maharaj owned Affirmative was sent straight into the lead by Dillon Khelawan, he was followed by Memories and the Horse of The Year 2019 Juice Man, tracking these were Master of War and General JN with Apocalypse following. The favourite Making Headlines was in no hurry with Brian Boodramsing and bided his time ahead of Thisonesisforron and Regal Intension who broke slowly trailed the field.

Going down the back-straight Affirmative still, heal sway but Juice Man moved closer to prompt the pace with Memories as Master of War and General JN track the pace. These were in turn followed by Apocalypse and Making Headlines. At the far turn, Affirmative still held sway from Juice Man with Master of War taking closer order along with General JN. Apocalypse was being asked to close while Making Headlines and Brian Boodramsing began to coast up to the leaders.

However, with 500 metres to race Prayven Badrie set General JN alight and the Jerry Narace owned horse quicken into the lead from Affirmative with Master of War coming to challenge with Making Headlines looking for racing room.

As the horses swung into the straight General JN held a length lead on Master of War and Affirmative with Making Headlines being switched to deliver his run.

With 200 metres left General JN was passed by the battling Master of War but Boodramsing unleashed Making Headline between the pair and the son of Headlines News quickened up impressively to pulled away for an impressive success from Master of War. General JN stayed on for third ahead of Affirmative.

The winner’s time was 2:05.35 for the trip.

In the co-feature NLCB –T&T Breeders Classic over 1,800 metres on the main track, Bella Riva exacted her revenge on ‘Triple Crown’ winner Wise Guy when she comprehensively beat him by 3 1/4 length. with pair pulling clear of third-place Smooth Sailing. Punters made both horses joint-favourites at 4-5.

The race was dictated by Brian Boodramsing who slowed up the race and made it into a sprint from the far turn with Wise Guy unable to match the sprinting speed of Bella Riva.

The winner’s time was a slow 1:59.1.

Training honours for the final day of the ARC 2020 racing season were shared between Champion trainer John O’Brien and Glenn Mendez. Both trainers saddled two winners.

Riding honours was also shared between champion jockey Brian Boodramsing and Dillon Khelawan who both rode two winners.

Racing will continue of New Year’s Day with the running of the Sian’s Gold Sprint.
