A 20-year-old man was expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate yesterday. He was charged with possession of a firearm and quantity of ammunition.

Keyshawn Charles of Felix Garcia Terrace, Bamboo Trace, Santa Cruz, was charged on Tuesday by PC Nanan of the North-Eastern Division Task Force, following a foot chase which occurred during early hours on Monday.

While the officers were patrolling Petit Curacaye Road, Santa Cruz, they observed a group of men on the roadway acting suspiciously.

As officers approached the group, the men dispersed, running in different directions. A foot pursuit ensued during which officers allegedly saw one of the suspects pointing a firearm in the direction of the law men.

One task force officer, fearful for his life and that of his colleagues, discharged one round from his police-issued firearm at the suspect.

The man was subsequently held a short distance away and allegedly found to be in possession of a Firestorm .45 calibre pistol which contained seven rounds of .45 ammunition.

Charles was later charged with the offence of possession of firearm and ammunition following investigations.

Man accused of attacking cop with knife

A 25-year-old man has been charged with several offences arising from an incident on February 15, where a police officer was attacked.

Chad Webb of La Canoa Road, lower Santa Cruz, was charged by PC Dass of the North-Eastern Division Task Force with assaulting a police officer, possession of an offensive weapon, resisting arrest and using obscene language.

The charges stem from an incident in which officers, were responding to a report of loud music in the La Canoa Road, lower Santa Cruz area, when they came across a group of about 20 people.

Upon seeing the officers, the group dispersed, however, one man, who appeared to be highly intoxicated, approached the officers and allegedly began behaving in an erratic manner, while using obscene language towards the officers.

Officers cautioned the man about his behaviour but attempts to dissuade him were futile.

While attempting to arrest the suspect, a struggle ensued during which the man began fighting with one of the officers.

During the altercation, Webb allegedly slashed the officer’s back with a knife, resulting in the officer sustaining several injuries.

Other officers immediately intervened and subdued the suspect.

The injured officer and the suspect were taken to hospital where they were medically treated.

Webb was subsequently charged with the offences.
