A Siparia man admitted to beating his wife yesterday but the matter hit a snag after his wife told the court that she did not want to proceed with the case.
Deo Persad-Ramsumair appeared virtually before Siparia Magistrate Nizam Khan charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm against his wife.
When the charge was read to him, he pleaded guilty.
The incident occurred over the weekend at the couple’s home.
The police intervened after the woman’s relative put up a post on Facebook alleging that her sister was being abused and begging for help from the authorities.
Persad-Ramsumair was subsequently arrested and charged by PC Williams of the T&T Police Service’s Gender-Based Violence Unit.
During the virtual hearing yesterday, however, after Persad-Ramsumair pleaded guilty, the victim, who was in the office of the defence attorney Lucina Cardines-Ragoonanan, interjected. She stated that she was not interested in continuing with the matter.
Prosecutor Sgt Bhajan then asked for an adjournment to seek legal advice on how to treat with the issue.
The facts were not read to the court and Persad-Ramsumair was denied bail. The matter was adjourned to March 31.
