Acting Chief Fire Officer Marlon Smith has just confirmed that the fire caused by an explosion at the NP compound in Sea Lots has been extinguished.

The explosion occurred during an operation at Tank 4 shortly after midday. Workers were immediately evacuated from the compound and emergency response teams, including fire appliances from Brigade Headquarters on Wrightson Road, were quickly on the scene.

Police Commissioner Gary Griffith was at the scene overseeing police and emergency operations.

Smith told Guardian Media there were no reports of injuries but they are still trying to ascertain that all persons are accounted for. Traffic, which had been temporarily diverted from the vicinity of the incident, has now returned to normal.

In a telephone interview, Energy Minister Franklin Khan said two people were hurt but the extent of their injuries is not yet known.
