Fire officers investigate a house fire that claimed the life of Cecil Andrews on Nooriega Road, Laventille Road, San Juan yesterday.

A San Juan pensioner has died in a fire.

Hours after the fire broke out at the home of Cecil Andrews, 64 – his remains were found among the charred ruins at Noreiga Lane, Laventille Road.

Reports said a call was made to the San Juan Fire Station just after 7 pm on Thursday after smoke was seen coming from a house atop a hill located off Saddle Road, San Juan.

As fire tenders from the Woodbrook and Wrightson Road Fire Stations responded, officers were unable to access the house which was approximately 150 metres from the roadway as the appliances could not safely navigate the hilly terrain without endangering themselves and other nearby residents.

Although the officers were able to implement other emergency measures, the heavily burglar-proofed house was well alight by the time they were able to get water to the scene.

The house which was occupied by Andrews alone, was completely destroyed.

Up to yesterday, fire officials continued to search the smouldering remains in an attempt to determine the cause of the fire as investigations are continuing.
