Prime Minister Dr.Keith Rowley says Tobagonians can expect to return to the polls before year-end.

This, as the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) is not fully constituted following the January 2021 six/six deadlock results in the THA elections.

Dr. Rowley said Cabinet decided on July 22 to ask President Paula Mae-Weekes to proclaim the amendments to the THA and Local Government Acts on July 26. The Acts give the Election and Boundaries Commission the power to increase Tobago’s electoral districts from 12 to 15.

The PM said the Commission has 90 days to report to Parliament on the division. The report will be debated and can be passed with a simple majority.

He said once that is done it clears the way for the Assembly to be dissolved and Chief Secretary to call the election.

Asked if he was disappointed that the two parties -People’s National Movement (PNM)and Progressive Democratic Patriots(PDP), did not resolve the issue before it got to this stage, he said: “yes.”

Dr. Rowley met with the two parties earlier this year, putting the cards on the table, allowing them an avenue to resolve the leadership issue.

The PDP proposed sharing power. However, it did not happen.
