Vicash Ramtahal, police officer appeared in court for several offences

A police officer and a Venezuelan national were expected to appear before a Chaguanas Magistrate yesterday to face charges in connection with trafficking in persons and other gang-related activities.

They were arrested during an anti-crime exercise conducted in the Central Division on Monday.

According to a statement from the police service the officer Vicash Ramtahal, who was last assigned to the Central Division, was charged with the following offences:

Being a Gang member.

Supporting a gang in the commission of gang-related activity.

Trafficking in Persons (minors).

Inciting or causing a child to engage in sexual activity. Misbehaviour in Public office.

Julio Caesar, the Venezuelan national was charged with these crimes:

Being a Gang member.

Supporting a gang in the commission of gang-related activity.

Trafficking in Persons (minors).

The police service said a second police officer who was arrested was released on Thursday pending further enquiries

Other persons are expected to be arrested soon as the probe continues.

The exercise was conducted by members of the Special Operations Response Team (SORT), the Counter-Trafficking Unit, and a specialized team established by Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith.
