While trying to control and defend herself and her elderly mother from a relative said to be a violent schizophrenic, a woman pressed her knee on his chest to pin him down on a chair.
Kaeron Dublin, 37, however, became unresponsive and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Dublin was discharged from the St Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital on May 4 after being warded for a week.
According to a police report, around 5.30 pm on Wednesday, the 35-year-old woman was at her Colley Street, Fyzabad home with her 67- year-old mother when Dublin began to act violently and threatened to kill them.
He reportedly grabbed the younger woman’s throat and began choking her. She pushed him away.
A report said he fell on the couch and began kicking and cuffing her.
In an effort to subdue him, she and her mother held him down, the report said.
She also placed her left knee on his chest close to his throat as he continued behaving violently, kicking at her and trying to escape.
Dublin’s father was contacted, as well as the police and ambulance. When his father arrived around 6.15 pm he met his son unresponsive and tried to resuscitate him.
The EHS personnel came afterwards but found no vitals. No marks of violence were observed on the body, which was taken to the San Fernando Mortuary, pending removal to the Forensic Science Centre for an autopsy.
The younger woman was taken to the Siparia District Health Facility where she was treated and discharged.
Cpl Smith is investigating.
