A manhunt has been launched for an escaped prisoner from the Golden Grove Remand Yard.

The escapee, identified as Siew Persad Ramdass, made a daring escape from the facility at about 9 am on Friday.

Officers of the Guard and Emergency Branch, Arouca CID and Task Force, as well as prison officers, are currently aiding in the search of the Bon Air area and its surroundings.

Ramdass is said to be originally from Blanchisseuse and is a convicted chicken thief.  He was sentenced to one year imprisonment in December 2020, after he pleaded guilty to stealing chickens from a farmer.

Prison sources said Ramdass was with other prisoners in the garden area called “The Veg” when he escaped.

The area is located on the south-eastern side of Golden Grove Prison.

A prison source said that the prisoners usually tend the garden from 7 am.  They said Ramdass was absent when officers took a headcount about two hours later, at about 9 am.

The escape came days after acting Commissioner of Prisons Dennis Pulchan said there are plans to equip all of Trinidad and Tobago’s nine prisons with CCTV cameras.

Pulchan, who was speaking at a Joint Select Committee meeting on Monday, revealed that there were no CCTV cameras in some prisons and some non-functional cameras at other prisons.

It was on Thursday this week that president of the Prisons Officers Association, Ceron Richards, highlighted that there was no alarm system at the prison.
