Nikoli Edwards, leader of the Progressive Party.

Progressives Party leader and San Fernando West candidate Nikoli Edwards has challenged both the UNC’s San Fernando West candidate Sean Sobers and incumbent MP Faris Al-Rawi to a debate on the constituency.

Edwards issued the call via a statement Monday after the UNC announced Sobers as the San Fernando West candidate.

Edwards said, “While the UNC has finally answered the call for younger blood to represent San Fernando West, the UNC itself continues to not be the answer. It goes without saying that the UNC isn’t the answer just as MP Al-Rawi and the PNM have proven that they don’t have what it requires to move our city to where it has the potential to be. What’s required is leadership that’s present and attentive. The UNC and PNM, which have both exchanged responsibility for representing the constituents of the marginal seat, having fallen out of favour with the people.

“I wish to challenge both Senator Sobers and AG Al-Rawi to a debate on the needs of the people of San Fernando West so that the people’s options can be fully ventilated. Our teams can work together to set a date for after the Carnival season.”

Edwards added, “If we are to move our politics to a place where we can be proud then these features are necessary for a maturing and policy and platform-based approach to organising our people’s business. I look forward to a campaign trail that’s clean and people-centred and ultimately reflects a departure away from the status quo.”
