An 18-year-old was gunned down in Arima just as the curfew period commenced on Tuesday night. The victim was identified as Andell Hernandez of Hill Top Drive, Maturita Extension, Arima.

According to a police report, at about 9 pm officers from the Arima Police Station received a report of a shooting in progress at Hill Top Drive, Maturita Extension, Arima. Upon arrival, they observed the body of a male of African descent, slim built, cornrow hairstyle, clad in cream ¾ pants, bareback, black slipper and a cream side bag, lying on its left side in a foetal position, on the roadway in the vicinity of Lp #E7063100.
The officers saw that the body bore multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body of the deceased.

They interviewed several people including the cousins of the deceased and they reported that at about 8:32 pm the victim was walking in a northerly direction along Hill Top Drive, Maturita Extension in company with them and on reaching Lp# E7063100 they saw two men, one of the men passed them and pulled out a firearm and soon after opened fire in their direction.

They all attempted to run for their lives north along the said road passing the next man who also pulled out a firearm and fired several shots in the direction of the deceased. Hernandez died on the scene.

The district medical officer visited the scene, viewed the body, made the pronouncement and issued a referral letter for the body to be taken to the Forensic Science Centre for a post mortem. The crime scene persons processed the scene and retrieved six 9mm shell casings and eight 40 cal shell casings. The deceased was identified by his mother Kathy-ann Guerra.
