Well-known Tobago calypsonian Alex Gift (Tobago Chalkie) was denied bail this morning when he appeared virtually before a Scarborough Magistrate’s court.
Gift, a businessman man, and his wife Verleen Gift, 47, labourer, were charged with four counts of inflicting grievous bodily harm and one count of assault by beating, respectively. The wife obtained bail last week.
This is according to Tobago Police Ambassador Inspector(Ag.) Pigott).
Piggott told Guardian Media the husband was denied bail as his matter falls under the Bail Amendment Act (17) of 2019. He also had a previous matter of a similar nature and was committed to stand trial at the Scarborough Assizes Court.
The Gifts of Riseland, Carnbee, appeared before the first and second Magistrates’ courts, respectively, charged for an incident with their landlady Sobah Samuel in Bon Accord on April 15.
According to the police report, Alex allegedly threw a substance on Samuel. His wife allegedly dealt her some blows after an argument broke out over outstanding rent and the construction of a wall on the leased land housing Busy’s electrical and hardware store.
The businessman will reappear in court on May 17, 2021. His wife’s matter was postponed to August 10, 2021.
