A vegetable vendor was gunned down while conducting sales at his Penal stall yesterday afternoon.

Devanand Soogrim, 53, died at the scene. A video circulating on social media shows a bleeding Soogrim being propped up by relatives in a sitting position as he took his final breaths.

Police said around 5.15 pm, Soogrim was at his vegetable stall near his home at Suchit Trace when a silver Aqua motor car pulled up and the front seat passenger, who wore a black baseball cap and a black mask, alighted and fired several shots at Soogrim.

As he slumped to the ground, the gunman re-entered the vehicle which sped off.

Sopgrim’s body was viewed by a district medical officer who ordered it’s removal. An autopsy is expected to be done today at the Forensic Science Centre.

Visiting the scene were Supt Ramphal, Ag Insp Jaggernath, Cpl Boodlal, Cpl Bridgemohan, PC Bernard, PC Deena and WPC Persad of the Penal CID and Homicide Bureau Region 3.
