Kim Gomes of Coconut Drive, Valencia is fighting for her life at the hospital after she was knocked down by a vehicle while standing at St Alban’s Road yesterday.

Police suspect the driver involved in the incident may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Police said Gomes was standing at the side of the road with two grocery bags in her hand when a black vehicle travelling west along the Valencia Stretch overtook another vehicle. The driver of that vehicle, according to the police is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, with the car coming into contact with Gomes.

She was thrown about 20 feet into the air before landing close to some coconut trees.

Police said the woman’s legs and arms were broken and she was taken by ambulance to the Sangre Grande Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery and remains at the intensive care unit.

The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was reported to be unconscious and had internal injuries.

He too was taken to the Sangre Grande Hospital where he is listed in a stable condition.

Police suspect that at the time of the accident, the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol.
